Jeremiah 17:14 “Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.”

In times of need, aside from grasping onto our faith, we depend on the skills and dedication of the doctors to whom we’ve entrusted our loved ones lives. Never did I think our family would experience such a miracle and it’s all thanks to All Children’s Hospital and charities that help support the hospital like Children’s Miracle Network.

My youngest niece Lainey was born five weeks early. When my sister called I raced down to the hospital to be with her and welcome our little miracle baby into the world. Upon being discharged from the hospital, my Mom aka “Grandma” was snuggling her into her car seat for her first car ride home when she noticed Lainey was gasping for air. We immediately got ahold of a nurse, but were told that we just needed to burp her better and were sent home.

When Lainey was 6 days old (Thanksgiving Day 2006), she started sleeping A LOT, vomiting and looked very pale. We took her up to the hospital and she was airlifted to another hospital an hour and a half away. She stayed there for the weekend being monitored for cardiac reasons. When she was finally released, she was sent home with a cardiac monitor that stayed on, especially while she was sleeping.

On New Year’s Day 2007, Lainey was now 6 weeks old and, again looked like she wasn’t doing very well. We contacted her doctor and was told to take her to the hospital in Tampa to be evaluated since they would have her records from Thanksgiving. About 3-4 minutes into our trip, Lainey’s heart monitor went off with a continuous tone — she had stopped breathing and had no heartbeat. My Mom was driving as fast as she could to the nearest EMS station as my sister pulled Lainey from her car seat and started CPR. As we pulled up to the EMS station, we handed Lainey over to the paramedics limp and motionless. They worked on her all the way to the hospital and were finally able to revive her. Once she arrived at the hospital, we were told she had to be transferred to a children’s hospital even further away. They swept her away and drove lights and sirens all the way to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Once Lainey was at the children’s hospital, we couldn’t see her for almost 2 hours while they worked on her — she had stopped breathing again and was put on a ventilator. She could not be touched or barely talked to because it would aggravate her and her vital signs would elevate. Our family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for 17 days while Lainey was in NICU until she was finally strong enough to come off the ventilator and we could hold her. When they released her from the hospital, she was given a list¬†of specialists she would have to see over the next two years. Early on, she showed signs of being behind other infants & toddlers her age, but over the course of two years she was eventually released from each specialist and made improvements.

This November our little miracle baby will be 10 years old and shows no signs of any learning disabilities or developments. She is a smart, goofy, vibrant, loving “Papa’s Girl”. I just couldn’t imagine life without this little ray of sunshine in it.
